#DIESEL MECHANIC HOW TO#
If you want to find out how to start a career in this industry, read on. SkillPointe can show you what to expect day to day, how much you’ll earn as a diesel mechanic, and show you what it’s like to get trained and find a job. While employers usually provide the expensive power tools and the computerized equipment, most mechanics acquire their own hand tools over time. In many workshops, diesel mechanics use laptops to diagnose problems and adjust engines. It’s work that’s becoming more complex and technical, as engines and other components rely on more electronic systems to do the work. These specialized technicians use power tools, such as lathes, grinding machines, welding equipment and pneumatic tools. You’ll also be required to run an engine performance tests on anything you fix.ĭiesel mechanics work in repair shops, on the roadside or on worksites. Your skills will be needed to diagnose faults as well as carry out the proper maintenance and overhauling of various types of diesel engines.

They safeguard the machines that grow food and transport it to communities across the country.ĭiesel powers so much of the heavy machinery used in industries like transport, auto, manufacturing and air travel. Diesel mechanics make sure the machines that help us meet our most basic needs keep running. They work on cars, trucks or any machine with a diesel engine.Īs a diesel mechanic, you’ll inspect, service and repair agricultural equipment, construction vehicles, boats, cranes and even power generators. Graduates of this program can expect to be able to find positions in the diesel field, marine industries, and aviation ground support equipment areas as entry level technicians and with experience and continued education will be able to work their way to becoming Master Technicians.Diesel mechanics, also called diesel technicians, are in high demand. Articulation agreements have been developed with technical colleges to reduce the cost of tuition for the students. Upon graduation, they will have acquired the necessary skills to enter the workforce or enroll in post-secondary or technical colleges to further their education. Students are encouraged to strive for excellence in their academic and technical studies.

Upon passing they receive their ASE credentials after completing one more full year employment in the trade. Senior students are offered the chance to test in four ASE areas of certification-diesel engines, air brakes, P.M.I., and steering/suspension. Students are also encouraged to participate in Distance Learning, Skills USA, and a variety of activities and clubs offered at GNB Voc-Tech. Practical work experience is performed on vehicles supplied by the regional school community and simulators purchased through grants. Students also receive training in soft skills, parts ordering, and Motor All-Data computerized repair information systems. The Diesel Service Technology program is NATEF certified. The curriculum is competency based using a multi-module approach to learning and is supported using the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) standards. Students also complete courses in diesel engine, air brake systems, hydraulic brake systems, steering/suspension systems, general electric systems, multiplexing concepts, DPF concepts, preventative maintenance, introductions to marine diesel cooling systems, marine wet and dry exhaust systems, marine transmissions, marine support equipment, airport ground support equipment, and careers in the marine and aviation industries. Students through labs and classroom situations are taught to operate state-of-the-art equipment available in today’s modern repair facilities.

Technical training will enable companies to add to the expertise of their staff members by being able to hire local students at an entry level position. The development of a viable Diesel training program will solve a multitude of shortcomings in the Diesel field.
